64 Katsushika Hokusai, geboren 1760 im heutigen Tokio, begann im Alter von 15 Jahren eine Lehre als Blockschnitzer. Er reiste durch Japan und wechselte häufig seine Lehrer und Schulen und auch seinen Namen. In seinem fast neunzigjährigen Leben verwendete Hokusai rund 30 Namen, darunter auch Gakyojin, das mit „verrückt auf Malen“ übersetzt werden kann. Hokusai wurde vor allem durch seine Bilderserie „36 Ansichten des Berges Fuji“ berühmt. Daraus entstammt sein berühmtestes Bild „Die große Welle vor der Küste bei Kanagawa“. Die Japaner zählten Hokusais Werke eher zur „Gebrauchskunst“, in Europa dagegen trug sein Werk zum Japonismus bei, inspirierte Künstler wie Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Egon Schiele und Gustav Klimt und beeinflusste den Jugendstil. He travelled through Japan, frequently changing his teachers and schools and also his name. During his lifetime of almost 90 years, Hokusai used about 30 different names, such as Gakyojin that can be translated as “crazy about painting”. The series “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji” became his most popular work. It includes the famous “Great Wave off Kanagawa”. In his homeland Japan, Hokusai’s work was rather considered as “everyday graphics”, whereas in Europe his art contributed to Japonism, inspired artists like Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt and also influenced Art Nouveau. Bien qu’au Japon son œuvre était considéré plutôt comme « graphisme quotidien », il avait un grand influence en Europe, inspirant des artistes comme Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Egon Schiele et Gustav Klimt, et notamment aussi l’Art Nouveau.
